Monsooned India Malabar AA is a coffee from the Malabar region of India, grown at elevations of 1,000–1,600 m. It is harvested between May and June and dry processed. The bean size is 17+. Ideal for brewing as filter coffee, in a French press, or in a fully automatic machine as Café Crème.

Enjoying Coffee from India: A Long History

Indian coffee has a fascinating history, deeply rooted in the Malabar region of southwestern India. Originally, during the 18th and 19th centuries, this coffee was transported from the Malabar Coast to Europe on wooden ships over the course of several months. During these long voyages, the beans were exposed to moist sea winds and the salty marine climate. Interestingly, this exposure changed their structure and aroma. The beans swelled, lost their green color, and developed a unique flavor that Europeans loved.

With the introduction of faster sea transport and modern packaging methods, however, coffee beans lost their “monsooned” character. To preserve this beloved flavor, coffee traders in Malabar developed a special process now known as “monsooning.” In this method, India Malabar coffee is stored in open warehouses during the monsoon season. This simulates the conditions of historic sea voyages and gives the coffee its characteristic aroma. The result? A coffee that is unique in both texture and flavor: larger, lighter, and yellowish in color.

Today, India Malabar coffee is known not only for its distinctive flavor but also as a representative product of the Malabar region. For coffee lovers around the world, it represents a special niche in the specialty coffee world. So if you’re looking for a coffee with a rich history and unique flavor, India Malabar is the perfect choice.
