The Eastern Highlands Region
This coffee comes from various smallholder farmers in Eastern Highlands Province, the leading coffee-growing region in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The province covers 11,157 km² and has a population of around 580,000. Coffee is the main source of income for most residents. The capital and center of Arabica production is Goroka, at an altitude of around 1,600 meters. The temperate highland climate, with maximum temperatures of 26°C and a pronounced rainy season from December to April, creates ideal conditions for the coffee cherries to ripen slowly and evenly.
Processing and Preparation
The selected coffee cherries are dried on raised beds for up to four weeks, then rested in conditioning bins and hulled shortly before shipping. The green coffee is dried to a moisture content below 12%, then screened and sorted. To preserve quality, it remains in the cooler highlands and is transported the roughly 320 kilometers to the port of Lae shortly before shipment.
Close, long-term collaboration with the farmers ensures consistent quality and strengthens the household incomes of the participating smallholder farmers.
