Description

FARM HISTORY

Great Mandailing comes from smallholder farms in Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra, on the volcanic slopes around Mount Sorik Marapi. This is the home of the Mandailing people.

During the colonial era, their name became “Mandheling,” which went on to become one of the most recognized names in Indonesian coffee.

Most families farm small plots, often alongside other crops, in rich volcanic soil. Farmers hand-pick the cherries and pulp them on the farm. The beans are partly dried, then hulled while still moist.

This is Giling Basah, Sumatra’s signature wet-hulling process, and it gives the cup its heavy body, low acidity, and earthy depth.

Local Sigararutang, Ateng, and Andungsari grow here alongside older Typica stock, and together they give the cup its full structure and lingering sweetness.

CypherED Profile

Great Mandailing pays tribute to one of the oldest and most storied names in Indonesian coffee. Pipe tobacco gives the cup a deep, smoky, savory backbone, and raw sugar cane sweetness keeps it clean and lingering.

Smallholder farmers grow it on the volcanic slopes of Mandailing Natal in North Sumatra, and it’s wet-hulled in the traditional Sumatran way. The result is a heavy-bodied, low-acid shot that’s honest and unmistakably Sumatran. It stands tall in milk and holds its own straight.
