Situated at 2,000-2,100 metres above sea level in Bochesa Kebele, Arbegona Wereda, the Bochesa Washing Station is part of Ethiopia’s Sidama Region, within the East Sidama Zone. Established in 2022 on 1.5 hectares of land, the station continues to develop its facilities and processing infrastructure.

Bochesa sources coffee cherries from 823 local farmers and processes approximately 500-600 tonnes each year. The varieties cultivated by its contributing farmers include 7454, 74110, 7440 and 74112. Beyond processing coffee, the station supports the local community by distributing coffee seedlings and providing financial assistance and premium payments to farmers based on their deliveries.

The station uses the washed processing method, following a series of carefully managed steps. Freshly delivered cherries are cleaned to remove leaves, stones, and other debris before being washed and pulped. The beans are then fermented in water tanks for 12-16 hours to remove the mucilage. After a second wash, the parchment is spread across raised drying beds and turned regularly throughout the day. It is protected from intense midday heat and covered at night, with drying typically taking 10-14 days.

Water management is an important part of the station’s operations. Measures include reducing water consumption, separating coffee pulp from wastewater, and treating wastewater before disposal. Once fully dried, the parchment is stored separately for around 20 days. Lots remain separate until they are cupped and assessed before shipment, helping maintain traceability and quality control throughout the process.
With plans to invest in underground water sources, artificial dryers, and solar drying tunnels, Bochesa continues to develop its infrastructure while supporting local farmers and refining its processing practices.
