With Gashema, we’re adding a coffee to our lineup that impressively demonstrates why Rwanda is now considered one of the most exciting origins in the specialty coffee world. Grown in the volcanic highlands of Gakenke District and processed at the renowned Abakundakawa Washing Station, this Natural Bourbon combines intense fruit notes with exceptional sweetness and remarkable clarity.

This coffee is named after Olivier Gashema, the producer of this lot. Together with the farmers of the Abakundakawa cooperative, he produces coffees that are not only compelling in the cup, but also support sustainable development and long-term prospects in Rwanda’s rural regions. Founded in 1999, the cooperative has long championed fair trade practices and the advancement of women in coffee production.

Origin & terroir

The coffee cherries grow at an elevation of around 1,760 meters in the mountainous Gakenke District in northern Rwanda. The combination of a cool mountain climate, fertile volcanic soils, and long ripening periods creates ideal conditions for coffees with pronounced sweetness, lively fruitiness, and impressive complexity.

In recent years, Rwanda has earned an excellent reputation for exceptional specialty coffees. Gashema is a wonderful example of how elegant yet expressive coffees from this region can be.

Variety & processing

This coffee is made exclusively from the traditional Arabica variety Bourbon. Bourbon is considered one of the most interesting coffee varieties in terms of flavor and is known for its delicate sweetness, balanced mouthfeel, and complex aromas.

The cherries are carefully hand-picked and then processed as Natural. During drying, the bean remains inside the fruit, creating especially intense fruit notes and pronounced sweetness. This processing gives Gashema its characteristic depth and distinctive expression.

Flavor – Dark fruit, chocolate & sweetness

Gashema reveals the full depth of a high-quality Natural Bourbon from Rwanda. Its intense sweetness is carried by ripe fruit notes and complemented by a delicate, wine-like complexity. The result is a layered cup that reveals new facets with every sip.

Dried plum – dark fruit with deep sweetness and a lingering finish

Dried apricot – juicy fruitiness and pleasant balance

Dark cherry – fully ripe, intense, and wonderfully clear

Wine-like – elegant complexity with exceptional depth

The cup is dense and aromatic, yet remains remarkably clear and balanced. A coffee that brings fruitiness, sweetness, and structure together in impressive harmony.

The roast

Kween – Uganda in the drum roaster

At our roastery, we process only carefully selected coffees sourced sustainably and fairly. After all, there can be no good coffee for our customers and guests without a healthy environment and happy farmers.

We gently roast all our coffees in our 15-kilo drum roaster at around 200 °C to create the best possible flavor experience for you. We draw on all our experience to find the perfect balance between the coffee cherry’s fruity nuances and wonderful aromas.

Only when we’re satisfied with the result does the coffee make its way into your hands and cups.
