Description

We recommend this lot for filter brewing.

  • Origin: Worka, Yirgacheffe
  • Varieties: Indigenous
  • Producer: Smallholder farmers
  • Tasting notes: Lime, Pear, Floral
  • Process: Washed

Banko Gotiti is a village in Gedeb district, in the Gedeo Zone, where Yirgacheffe is located. The local cooperative was founded in 2012, independently of Worka, a larger organization, and has around 300 members who grow different traditional Ethiopian coffee varieties.

In Ethiopia, many producers work small plots and grow other crops as well. During harvest, they usually take their coffee cherries to a nearby washing station, where they are weighed, sorted, and processed. Because cherries from many producers are mixed into daily lots, it is difficult to know exactly who produced the coffee in each lot. Even so, efforts are made to buy from the same stations every year through export partners.

In this region, farmers normally do not have access to fertilizers or pesticides. For natural coffees, the cherries are sorted, cleaned, and dried on raised beds for 8–25 days, depending on the weather.
