In our early days as a specialty coffee roaster, Yirgacheffe was one of the origins that first caught our attention. Its bright citrus character and delicate sweetness opened a new perspective on what coffee could be. This harvest brings us back to those memories through several remarkable lots from the region. Among them is Worka, a coffee that feels familiar yet continues to surprise us.

There is something about Worka that reminds us of fresh flowers in the morning. We developed the roast to bring together its natural sugary sweetness and vibrant berry character. The natural process adds depth to the cup, moving between delicate blue florals, ripe berries and a bright citrus finish. It is a profile that feels expressive without losing its clarity.

Brewed by hand, the first sip brings fresh blueberry and grape to the forefront. As the cup opens, a gentle morning glory aroma emerges alongside the sweetness of mixed berries. As espresso, Worka takes on a different dimension with juicy grapefruit, vanilla, layered berries and a lingering brown sugar finish. Add milk and the profile settles into milk chocolate, toasted almond, smooth blueberry milk and vanilla sweetness. Worka is a straightforward pleasure for those who love natural Ethiopian coffee. No unnecessary distractions, just fruit, florals and sweetness in a cup.

The Producer

Ephtah Specialty Coffee was founded in 2021 by Wubit Bekele. A Q-grader with experience in Ethiopia’s coffee industry, she built the company around quality and closer relationships with coffee-growing communities. Working across Ethiopia’s diverse coffee regions, Ephtah brings greater attention to the people behind each lot and the landscapes that shape their coffee.

Worka sits within the wider Yirgacheffe landscape in southern Ethiopia. Here coffee is part of everyday life, grown by smallholder farmers across the surrounding highlands. Generations of farming knowledge and the diversity of indigenous coffee varieties contribute to the region’s identity. Each harvest offers a glimpse into a place where coffee remains closely connected to its people and the land they cultivate.

This G1 natural lot is sourced through Ephtah. The cherries are dried intact before the beans are prepared for export, allowing the fruit and seed to develop together throughout the drying process. It is a traditional approach to Ethiopian coffee that places careful attention on harvest quality and post harvest handling. For us, Worka is more than a name of origin. It is an invitation to explore the people and practices behind a coffee that carries a small part of southern Ethiopia into the cup.
