Description
Ethiopia – Guji Gr. 1 Qumere BIO
In the 1990s, bushfires destroyed large parts of the Guji region. Tesfaye Bekele, founder of Suke Quto Farm, worked to restore the soil by combining reforestation with coffee cultivation. Despite initial skepticism, he convinced the local population to plant seedlings and adopt new methods.
Today, Suke Quto has grown significantly and works with around 287 contract farmers. The project brought not only ecological recovery but also economic benefits: schools were built, and many families gained a stable income. As a result, Guji became a coffee-growing region for the first time.
Suke Quto comprises two farms and a washing station. Tesfaye, formerly active in natural resource management, still sees the project primarily as a conservation initiative. The main varieties grown are Welicho (large, purple cherries) and Kurume (small, dense cherries). The semi-forest farm uses shade trees and natural mulch for sustainable fertilization.
In addition to its own production, Suke Quto sources coffee cherries from local smallholder farmers. These are depulped at the washing station, fermented for up to 48 hours, and then carefully dried on raised beds.
