origin and provenance
Etiopia Chelbesa comes from Chelbesa, in the Gedeb district, an area closely associated with the renowned Yirgacheffe origin and known for producing elegant, floral Ethiopian coffees with exceptional clarity.
Chelbesa Washing Station, managed by SNAP Coffee, is located at about 2,100 meters above sea level, near the town of Worka. Chelbesa is the largest growing area in Gedeb, with about 1,240 hectares of coffee farms spread across elevations ranging from 1,925 to 2,110 meters.
This lot, Magarissa Chelbesa #5, is produced from Ethiopian Heirloom varieties. The washing station manager, Alemayahu Tilahun, selects ripe red cherries delivered by small producers in the area, which are then processed at the station.
The coffee undergoes a traditional washed process, particularly suited to highlighting the aromatic clarity and delicacy typical of the finest coffees from this part of Ethiopia.
The name Magarissa means “green” in Oromiffa and is used to identify balanced coffees, generally characterized by sweet, delicate, and fresh profiles.
With a score of 86.5, this lot’s sample was described as delicate and sweet. Notes of peach and dried fruit emerge in the cup, supported by caramel sweetness and complemented by soft herbal nuances.
A clean, elegant Ethiopian coffee, less explosive and fermentative than contemporary naturals, expressing Chelbesa’s finesse and distinctive identity through the washed process.
