Description

Kokose is one of the areas in Bensa District, where coffee production is the main economic activity and primary source of income for local residents. The altitude and conditions allow the cherries to develop densely, resulting in cups with spicy, fruity, sweet, juicy flavors and notes of nectar and coffee flowers.

Basha Bekele is one of the most internationally recognized small-scale producers in the Sidama area. He operates six main coffee processing plants in the Bensa area: Bombe, Bonjobe, Bode, Kokose, Murago, and Shantawene. All are family-owned farms. Other native tree species in the area, such as birbira, wanza, and acacia, help maintain soil fertility and control erosion.

At the Kokose plant, a natural drying process is used, in which whole cherries are slowly dried on raised African beds under strict turning and sorting controls, ensuring consistency and concentrated sugars.

His commitment to the community is equally remarkable: in addition to paying fair prices, he makes a second payment to the 126 smallholder farmers from whom he buys cherries once the coffee has been sold, ensuring equitable and sustainable relationships. In the cup, it stands out for its complex, sweet, and vibrant profile.
