Description
At Almanegra, we believe coffee should be enjoyed at any time of day. That’s why, for years, we’ve explored decaf with the same passion as any other origin. We started with a Colombian decaf from our friend Ana Mustafá; then came Ethiopian naturals, followed by blends from Africa and Indonesia. In 2024, we developed a blend of coffees from four continents, seeking a profile worthy of our selection. In that blend, 50% came from a washed coffee from Neria, Chocamán, processed at Finca San Felipe. That experience showed us that Mexico had everything needed to give us an extraordinary decaf.
Our relationship with the De Gasperín family goes back even further than Tostadora de Cafés Extraordinarios. In 2019, we served a coffee at Almanegra processed at Rancho San Felipe and sourced from 18 producers in Paredones, in the Sierra del Gallego. The hospitality of Jimena, Melissa, and Don Adrián cemented a bond built on respect, learning, and admiration for coffee from Veracruz.
Finca San Felipe has been working with coffee since 1924, preserving the essence of the Altas Montañas: volcanic soils, a privileged climate, and ideal elevation. In Neria, they grow Catimor arabica at 1,350 meters above sea level, using meticulous processing methods. The profile expresses notes of chocolate and hazelnut, mild acidity, and a medium body.
For 2026, our offering is this single-origin natural decaf, grown and processed in Neria and decaffeinated in Veracruz using the Mountain Water Process, the first of its kind in Latin America. This method uses water from Citlaltépetl volcano to extract the caffeine while preserving the coffee’s structural integrity, sweetness, and texture. Since the entire process takes place in Veracruz, its carbon footprint is significantly lower.
The story also belongs to those who make it possible:
Don Adrián, guardian of the craft, recognizes each machine by its sound; Melissa, with her scientific rigor and business vision, transformed the farm into a space for traceability and learning; Jimena, always learning, brings leadership and a forward-looking perspective.
This decaf is the culmination of our exploration and conviction:
Mexico can offer specialty decafs that honor their origin and lead the way in the country’s coffee scene.
