Honduras is the largest coffee producer in Central America, and Montecillos is one of the country's six official coffee-growing regions. Located along the Salvadoran border in the southwest of the country, Montecillos offers ideal climate conditions and high elevations for growing specialty coffee. This coffee is produced by small and medium-sized farmers who are part of MARCAFE, an association of around 660 producers who grow coffee on 70 hectares on the slopes of the Sierra de Montecillos. All MARCAFE members use environmentally conscious agricultural practices: they enrich the soil with organic matter, protect the forests, and preserve water resources.
