Description

ABOUT THIS COFFEE
The Banko Taratu site is a modern coffee processing station owned and operated by EDN Ethiopian Coffee Export PLC, a family business founded in 2018. EDN has been a partner of our coffee sourcer, Belco, for half a decade. Since 2021, this relationship has flourished, built on shared values of quality and transparency, and a passion for exceptional Ethiopian coffees. The station is a key part of EDN’s operations, which include four different sites in the Gedeo Zone of southern Ethiopia. Banko Taratu is a community in the Gedeb District, located in the Gedeo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). This region lies at the southern end of the famous Yirgacheffe coffee-growing area, near the Guji Zone. They oversee processing for more than 500 producers and employ 130 staff members. During harvest, the site employs a large team of 190 staff members to manage daily processing. The site is managed by a team of brothers, Seleshi and Degafe Beyene, who oversee the collection of cherries from all contributing producers.
Yirgacheffe
The Yirgacheffe appellation covers a limited area. It is characterized by low production volumes but a high perceived quality. The name Yirgacheffe refers to a town with a population of a few tens of thousands. The growing areas are Yirgacheffe, Kochéré, Wenago, and Gelena Abaya.
