Huehuetenango is the Guatemalan region that commands the most respect in the international specialty coffee market, and for good reason. At 1,700 meters above sea level, with three varieties (Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuaí) and washed processing, this coffee builds a profile that goes beyond a cacao base: notes of raisins and honey, hints of currant and tobacco in the finish, and a lasting chocolatey sweetness. It scores 83 points on the SCA scale and is available whole bean or in several grind options.

Description

Specialty coffee from Huehuetenango, Guatemala, at 1,700 meters

Huehuetenango holds a place of its own on Guatemala’s coffee map. It’s not the most accessible region or the easiest place to farm: plantations grow on slopes steeper than 50%, in mountains above 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) above sea level. Paradoxically, that challenging terrain is part of the appeal. The loamy, clay-rich soil, with few stones, offers the drainage and structure roots need to develop properly, while the altitude slows fruit ripening enough for sugars and aromatic compounds to concentrate. The result in the cup has a complexity that Huehuetenango produces consistently, lot after lot.

The three varieties grown—Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuaí—each contribute their own character. Bourbon brings sweetness and complexity, Caturra adds acidity and clarity, and Catuaí brings balance and body. None dominates; the blend is what defines the profile. Washed processing preserves the varieties’ clarity: without interference from the pulp, the roaster gets the coffee in its truest form.

It’s recommended for espresso, pour-over, French press, and superautomatic machines. In espresso, the cacao base becomes more concentrated and the chocolatey finish lingers. In pour-over or French press, the notes of raisins, honey, and currant open up, while the gentle acidity makes for an easy-drinking cup.

At Cafés El Criollo, we use a natural roast for this lot: our goal is for Huehuetenango to reach the cup unchanged, without adding bitterness that would compete with the sweetness already developed in the beans by the altitude.

Why choose this coffee

If you’ve already tried other coffees from our coffees of the world, Guatemala Huehuetenango may surprise you for one particular reason: the finish. Most of the Central American coffees we work with have clean, straightforward profiles, with chocolate or citrus taking center stage. This one has those qualities, but adds a layer of raisins and honey, with hints of currant and tobacco that linger much longer than expected. This is a gourmet coffee that keeps going after the cup is empty.

The profile is complex without being challenging. Its gentle acidity and pronounced sweetness make it approachable from day one, whether you drink it as espresso or prefer pour-over in the morning. It doesn’t call for adjustments or experimentation: it works well right away. That also makes it a great gift choice, especially for someone just getting interested in specialty coffee who needs an introduction with a story, traceability, and a rich but approachable profile.

The combination of three varieties—Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuaí—grown on slopes steeper than 50% at 1,700 meters is what creates this complexity. This isn’t a generic Guatemalan coffee: it’s Huehuetenango, which is synonymous with consistent quality in the international specialty coffee market, and here you have the details to verify it.
