Rwanda produces very high-quality coffee, carefully washed. The coffee grows in volcanic soil at elevations of 1,500–2,200 m (4,920–7,220 ft). It is grown and processed on small farms of less than 2.5 hectares.

As a result of the civil war, almost all coffee plantations in Rwanda were completely destroyed after 1994. Fortunately, with international assistance, recovery began in the early 21st century. This coffee comes from a “private import” by the Salvatti Foundation, which helps local communities meet their basic needs. Some of the proceeds from coffee sales go toward education, building schools, water sources, and more.

Rwanda Virunga is characterized by a deep flavor and aroma, with distinct notes of chocolate and jasmine tea, as well as subtle citrus acidity. It is hand-picked, and selected cherries are wet-processed. Sensory score: 87.3 SCA points.
