Description

Permata Gayo Cooperative is based in the Bener Meriah district of Aceh Province, at the northern tip of Sumatra. Founded in 2006 by 50 farmers who joined forces to rebuild their livelihoods through coffee, the cooperative has since grown steadily. In 2007, it achieved organic certification, followed by Fairtrade Organic (FTO) status in 2009. Today, the cooperative counts 2,053 members across 39 villages in the region. By bringing the entire production process—from farmer to final export—under one roof, Permata Gayo has significantly improved both quality and traceability, ensuring a clear connection from Aceh to the roaster. This growth has also enabled the cooperative to share more of the final price of coffee directly with its farmers, strengthening livelihoods throughout the community. This coffee has notes of dark chocolate, plum and tamarind.
