Description

This Mocca Matari coffee comes from the mountainous Bani Mattar region, west of Yemen’s capital, Sana’a. It is an exceptional high-altitude coffee, grown between 3,150 and 3,300 meters, where natural conditions allow small, dense, highly concentrated beans to develop. Traditionally grown varieties in this region include Ismaili, Typica, and Bourbon, among the oldest in the country.

Processed using the natural method, the coffee dries in the sun before the husk is removed with a millstone, following methods unchanged for generations. Harvested from October to December, it develops a distinctive aromatic profile: an intense fragrance, wild and exotic notes, pronounced acidity, and a chocolatey aftertaste. Its long finish and raw character make it a rare coffee that reflects the deep history of Yemeni coffee.

The history of coffee in Yemen

The history of coffee originated in Yemen, the land where the first Arabica was discovered and where coffee cultivation remains rare and precious to this day. Considered an exceptional pleasure, Yemeni coffee carries a unique cultural heritage.

According to the founding myth, a Yemeni shepherd was the first to notice the remarkable effects of these unfamiliar berries. As he grazed his goats in the mountains, he observed that they suddenly seemed full of energy after eating them. Intrigued, he took the fruit to the nearest monastery, giving rise to what would later become one of the world’s most beloved beverages.
