Kenyan Coffee and Why Nyeri Produces Some of the Best Coffee in the World
Kenya is one of the origins that needs no introduction in the specialty coffee world. If Ethiopia is where coffee comes from, Kenya is where it was turned into a science. The Kenyan auction system, processing standards, and SL varieties developed in the 1930s by Scott Laboratories—all of it is designed to bring out the best in every bean.
Nyeri lies in the center of the country, between the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya. Growing areas range from 1,700 m to 2,000 m in altitude, and the red volcanic soil is rich in minerals. Temperatures are cool year-round—cold nights, warm days, but no excessive heat—which slows the ripening of coffee cherries and produces dense beans with complex acidity.
Nyeri has two harvest seasons: an early harvest (May–July) and the main harvest (September–December). This dual cycle, combined with the volcanic soil and altitude, makes Nyeri one of the few regions in the world where 100% Arabica coffee consistently scores above 85 on the SCA scale.
SL-28: The Variety That Put Kenya on the Specialty Coffee Map
SL-28 was selected in 1931 by Scott Laboratories (hence “SL”) from a drought-resistant variety brought from Tanganyika (now Tanzania). The aim was to develop a productive, adaptable plant. But the researchers discovered more than they expected: SL-28 produces coffee with acidity unlike that of any other variety—berries, all intense and juicy, impossible to mistake for anything else.
However, SL-28 is vulnerable to leaf rust and CBD—Coffee Berry Disease. Growing it is a risk farmers take on every season, precisely because what ends up in the cup is worth all the effort. Newer, more resistant varieties (Ruiru 11, Batian) exist, but none can reproduce the SL-28 profile.
The beans in this lot are screen 18—the AA classification in the Kenyan system, the largest sorting category. AA beans are the most sought-after because their uniform size allows for an even roast and balanced extraction.
Thiriku Washing Station and the Washed Process
Thiriku is a washing station in Nyeri, operated by Thiriku Farmers’ Cooperative Society—a cooperative with more than 1,000 members, each growing a few hundred trees on small plots averaging half a hectare. The cooperative registered in 2000 after splitting from a larger union.
The coffee is processed using the washed method. Upon delivery, cherries are sorted, and only fully ripe ones are processed. Farmers receive a delivery ticket only after their cherries pass inspection. After depulping, the beans undergo controlled fermentation, then are washed with fresh water in channels that also separate out lower-density beans. They are dried on African raised beds—Thiriku has 136 drying tables—for 10–16 days, until they reach the optimal moisture content of 11–12%.
The station has earned a strong reputation for consistent lots and the prices it pays farmers—among the highest in Kenya. The quality of the processing comes through directly in the cup: a “clean” lot, free from fermentation defects, in which the SL-28 variety’s notes stand out clearly.
Flavor Profile: Berries and Dried Fruit
We have to admit: Kenya Nyeri AA Thiriku isn’t a coffee for everyone. It’s for those who want intensity. If you’re looking for a quiet cup, this isn’t the lot for you. But if you want a coffee that truly wakes you up—not just through caffeine, but through flavor—you’re in the right place.
With a medium roast profile, this freshly roasted coffee has a light-to-medium body—not thin, but without the weight of a Brazilian or Burundi lot. Its defining feature is the acidity: high, lively, and juicy. It isn’t aggressive or sharp; it’s the acidity you taste when you bite into a blackcurrant or a ripe raspberry.
Berries take the lead—you taste them right away. Then dried fruit adds concentrated sweetness and complexity that unfolds especially in the aftertaste. The finish is long, with acidity that lingers pleasantly and makes you want another sip.
Compared with Burundi (which is sweet and “settled”) or El Salvador (balanced, with medium acidity), Kenya Nyeri is at the opposite end of the spectrum: it’s a coffee with personality, unlike anything else. Its 86 SCA points confirm one simple thing—this lot is genuinely good, not just intense.
How to Brew Kenya AA Thiriku at Home
Its high acidity and light-to-medium body make this lot shine in brew methods (V60, Chemex), but it also delivers excellent results as espresso—especially if you like shots with character.
Espresso Recipe
Dose: 18 g coffee (fine grind)
Yield: 36–40 g in the cup
Extraction time: 25–30 seconds
The shot is intense, with concentrated berries and a thin but stable crema. The acidity is present and lively—it doesn’t get lost under the espresso machine’s pressure. In a flat white, the berries combine with the milk in a way that calls to mind a raspberry smoothie.
☕ Corretto tip: If the acidity seems too intense in espresso, increase the dose to 19–20 g and keep the yield at 36–38 g. A shorter ratio (1:1.8–1:1.9) reduces perceived acidity and brings out more of the dried fruit’s sweetness.
Brew Recipe (V60 / Chemex / Filter)
Dose: 15 g coffee per 250 ml water
Grind: Medium (like coarse salt)
Water temperature: 92–95°C
Total time: 3:00–3:30 minutes
With a V60, the berries open up fully, while dried fruit emerges in the aftertaste as a long, concentrated sweetness. The acidity is bright—but clean—and if you want to understand why Kenya is considered the queen of specialty coffee, brew this lot as filter coffee.
☕ Corretto tip: Let the beans degas for at least 7–10 days from the roast date (printed on the bag) before grinding them. At 86 SCA points, every day of degassing counts.
