Rwanda Remera Gisagara brings tropical fruit to notes of chocolate and caramel
Rwanda Remera Gisagara is an 87-point SCA specialty coffee, made from the Red Bourbon variety. Dark chocolate and caramel are complemented by mango and pineapple, with hints of blackberry, orange, and cinnamon.
It comes from Gisagara, Rwanda’s Southern Province, at an altitude of 1,700–2,100 meters. It is washed at Remera Station, whose name accompanies this coffee’s origin.
Medium acidity and a medium-to-full body make for a balanced cup with a velvety texture. The finish is clean and lingering, with notes of nuts and rooibos. Its profile works well both black and in milk-based drinks.
At Claro Cafe, we roast it fresh in Romania in an omniroast style. It is available in 250 g, 500 g, and 1,000 g bags, whole bean or ground to order.

Origin and technical details
Gisagara in Rwanda’s Southern Province
This coffee comes from the Gisagara region, at elevations between 1,700 and 2,100 meters. The region and Remera processing station are the origin references listed in the coffee’s product details.
The profile brings together dark chocolate, caramel, and tropical fruit, with medium acidity and a medium-to-full body.
Red Bourbon and cup sweetness
Red Bourbon is an Arabica variety whose cherries turn red when ripe. Rwanda Remera Gisagara is made from 100% Red Bourbon.
Caramel and tropical-fruit sweetness meet a velvety texture. A hint of cinnamon and a finish of nuts and rooibos complete this coffee’s character.
Washed processing at Remera Station
Remera is the station where the coffee is washed, a method also known as fully washed. The station handles this step in one central location, making the processing traceable.
In the cup, the processing comes through in a clear profile, with distinct fruity notes and a clean finish. This coffee is rated at 87 SCA points.

Aroma and flavor profile
Dark chocolate and caramel form the flavor base. Mango and pineapple bring tropical sweetness, while blackberry and orange round out the fruity side of the profile.
Cinnamon appears as a subtle accent, linking the sweet and fruity notes. As the coffee cools, the flavors may become easier to distinguish, especially when brewed as a pour-over.
Acidity is medium, and the body is medium to full, with a smooth, velvety texture. The clean, lingering finish recalls nuts and rooibos—a tasting association, not added ingredients.

Brewing
Recommended brewing methods
Pour-over brings out the tropical fruit and delicate hint of cinnamon. Espresso concentrates the chocolate and caramel, while the velvety body also works well in milk-based drinks.
Espresso machine
Brings out dark chocolate and caramel, with fruity accents and a velvety body. Start with 18 g of coffee for 36–38 g in the cup, pulled in 26–30 seconds. Adjust the grind to taste for a balance of sweetness and acidity.
Recommended for clarity of flavorPour-over (drip coffee maker, V60, Chemex)
Brings out mango, pineapple, blackberry, and orange, with a delicate hint of cinnamon. For V60, try 15 g of coffee to 240 ml of water at 93–94°C, with a brew time of 2:30–3:00 minutes. Use this recipe as a starting point and follow the flavors as the cup cools.
French press
Highlights the full body and velvety texture. Caramel and chocolate sweetness become more prominent, with fruit rounding out the flavor. A good choice if you prefer a rich cup with a long finish and balanced acidity.
Turkish coffee pot
Emphasizes natural sweetness and a velvety body, with dark chocolate, caramel, and tropical fruit. The finish retains a subtle spicy note. A good fit if you enjoy traditional brewing and sweet flavors in a full-bodied cup.
Moka pot
Highlights chocolate, caramel, and body, with tropical fruit in the background. The result is an intense, balanced cup for those who prefer concentrated coffee. Texture and sweetness are the defining features of this brew.
Cappuccino and latte
Combines caramel sweetness and a velvety body with milk. Tropical notes and a delicate hint of cinnamon can round out the drink. Try the espresso black first, then adjust the amount of milk to preserve the flavors you want.
Frequently asked questions about Rwanda Remera Gisagara
What does “rooibos tea” in the finish mean, and why does it appear?
Rooibos is a South African red tea known for its slightly sweet, gently woody flavor and lack of astringency. The descriptor is used for coffee when the finish has just that character: sweet and rounded, with a subtle herbal note and no dryness. Nothing is added—it’s a tasting association, the way Q Graders describe what they taste in the cup using familiar references.
Is it as acidic as a Kenyan coffee?
No, and that’s the main difference. Kenya Nyeri, for example, has a juicy, sharp acidity that immediately stands out. Rwanda Remera Gisagara has medium acidity: present, but mellowed by the fruit and chocolate. If you enjoy African coffee’s complexity but have found high acidity off-putting, Rwanda is a good choice.
Why does it matter that it’s 100% Red Bourbon?
Because the variety helps explain the profile. Red Bourbon yields less than modern varieties, but produces beans with natural sweetness and greater aromatic complexity. That’s why Rwandan coffees are sweet and velvety, not just acidic and fruity. A lot made from 100% Red Bourbon, without blends of other varieties, ensures a consistent expression of this character.
Does it really work in milk-based drinks, even though it’s specialty coffee?
Yes, and that’s a notable exception. We generally recommend drinking complex coffees black so their nuances don’t get lost. Here, the combination of a velvety body, caramel sweetness, and tropical fruit comes through the milk without being diluted—and the cinnamon becomes even more pronounced. Still, it’s worth trying black first, so you know what you gain or lose.
Does it work in an automatic espresso machine?
Yes. Although this is a specialty coffee with a complex profile, its medium acidity makes it forgiving enough for extraction in an automatic machine. One of our customers uses it this way with a fine grind and confirms that the fruity flavors come through beautifully. Just note that it comes in 250 g, 500 g, or 1,000 g bags—if you want a format designed for automatic machines, check out the Automatico range.
How long does it stay fresh, and how should I store it?
Freshly roasted coffee is at its best within the first 30–60 days. Keep the bag tightly sealed at room temperature, away from light and moisture—not in the refrigerator. Grind only what you need before each brew; in a coffee with so many layers, the volatile fruity notes fade first.
