Description

We are especially proud of our lupine coffee. We followed the lupine from sowing to harvest. Right "on our doorstep" in Waldbronn, Martin Bauer grew the lupines we use for our lupine coffee. Jochen Ludat roasts the lupines in a specially developed roasting process. Their shape and size are reminiscent of peaberries in coffee.

We are currently roasting the Boregine variety, a white sweet lupine.

Martin Bauer and Sven Herzog in the lupine field.

The coffee is already ground and ideal for brewing with a pour-over dripper or French press. The grounds swell a little more than conventional coffee grounds. Therefore, we do not recommend preparing it in an espresso machine.

The whole beans offered are not suitable for automatic coffee makers!

This coffee is naturally caffeine-free.

We followed the process from sowing to harvest.

GRIND SIZE

We offer our lupine coffee in two different grind sizes: filter coffee and French press. We do not offer whole beans.

PREPARATION

Lupine coffee can be brewed like regular drip coffee. We recommend using 10 g of coffee per 100 ml of water. You can adjust the amount to suit your own taste.

INGREDIENTS

Roasted white sweet lupine, Boregine variety

ABOUT OUR "LUPINE COFFEE" PROJECT

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS STARTS RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP
Our lupine coffee from Waldbronn-Reichenbach

Sven Herzog and Jochen Ludat have turned their initial Waldbronn start-up for premium specialty coffee into an established roastery that now operates at two locations due to high demand. “Alongside premium single-estate coffees from traditional coffee-growing countries, it’s important for us to keep an eye out for trends,” says Sven Herzog. That’s how he came across sweet lupines. Sweet lupines were first mentioned in connection with coffee as early as 1897. Lupines were a popular coffee substitute until after World War II. With the arrival of inexpensive imported coffee, lupines gradually lost their significance in the German market.

It’s all the more encouraging that sweet lupines are once again being grown more widely in Germany. Right on the doorstep of the roastery in Waldbronn, Martin Bauer has been growing sweet lupines since April, which will be refined into lupine coffee at the Herzogkaffee roastery after harvest.

“The short journey from my field straight to the roastery shows how closely agriculture and coffee roasting work together here in Waldbronn,” emphasizes Martin Bauer. In Jochen Ludat’s drum roaster, the sweet lupine beans are gently roasted using a specially developed process and then ground.

With its delicate aroma reminiscent of coffee, sweet lupine coffee offers several advantages. It is naturally caffeine-free, so it is not chemically decaffeinated like conventional decaf coffee, and the roasting process leaves it completely acid-free. And, of course, lupine coffee contains no other additives. A genuine local natural product.
