Description

Rich & Robust Kaʻū Dark Roast

A delightful dark roast Kaʻū coffee that’s full-bodied and complex. Its nuances shine with milk, and it’s equally satisfying as a cold brew.

Darker Expression of Kaʻū Coffee

Kaʻū Darkwood takes its name from Wood Valley, one of Kaʻū’s coffee-growing regions that contribute to the blend, alongside coffees from nearby Pear Tree. It shares the same blend as Kaʻū Morning Glory—Typica, Bourbon, Maragogipe, and Caturra—offering a darker expression of Kaʻū coffee diversity.

A Complex Kaʻū Dark Roast

Kaʻū Darkwood is a bold, full-bodied dark roast crafted from 100% Kaʻū coffee — the same origin and beans as our celebrated Kaʻū Morning Glory, but roasted deeper to unlock a different range of flavors.

Overall, Kaʻū Darkwood offers a silky, layered experience that satisfies both black coffee purists and those who enjoy milk-based drinks. Evaluated as espresso, it earned 93 points and was praised as “especially nuanced in milk,” with rich chocolate, sweet floral, and creamy nut tones. Enjoyed black or with milk, this dark roast Hawaiian coffee brings body, depth, and complexity to the cup.

Milled in Small Batches, Roasted to Order

To preserve its exceptional flavor and vibrancy, our Kaʻū coffees are milled and graded shortly before roasting at our own farm and mill. This attention to freshness ensures that every roast showcases the complexities of Kaʻū coffee year-round.

Most coffees are milled and graded several months before roasting—a bit like shelling a peanut six months before you eat it. We keep our Kaʻū coffees in parchment, the thin, papery layer that protects each bean, until shortly before roasting. Each week, we mill and grade Kaʻū Darkwood in small batches to preserve its freshness and lively nuance in the cup. After milling, the coffee is roasted to order, with the roast date labeled on the bag.
