Oliang iced coffee from Thailand

Coffee Recipes

As in all tropical countries with a coffee culture, iced coffee is trendy in Thailand, known as Oliang. In the Teochew dialect from which the name is derived, “o” means “black,” and “liang” means “cold.” So, Oliang refers to black iced coffee.

However, this is only partially descriptive of the traditional drink in which the coffee beans are ground with additional ingredients such as corn, soy, and sesame seeds. As is typical in the region, coffee is often supplemented with sweetened condensed milk. In this case, it is known as Oliang Yok Lor.

Although it is possible to roast your Oliang coffee mix, it is better to purchase a blend online.

Supplies:

  • 4 tablespoons Oliang coffee mix
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
  • A paper filter and funnel
  • A glass half full of ice cubes

Preparation:

  1. Brew the Oliang coffee mix and let it cool.
  2. While cooling, add the sugar and stir until dissolved.
  3. Pour the chilled coffee over ice.
  4. Top up with sweetened condensed milk. Enjoy!
