Description
Our latest Limited Release offering comes from the Sierra Mixteca region of Mexico. Green coffee importers, Raw Material work closely with smallholder farmers in Chiapas and Oaxaca to improve profitability and yield. Although Mexico is a rising economic power, Oaxaca and Chiapas have poverty rates of 60-80%, making them the two poorest states in Mexico.
With coffee leaf rust on the rise over the last ten years and a lack of financial and agricultural infrastructure, production yields are down by 90%.
The average yield in Oaxaca is just 100kg of parchment per hectare. In context, Colombia produces around 2,400kg. With close connections in Oaxaca, Raw Material’s work has helped to introduce a baseline for coffee pricing and pre-financing as currently, the most common means of trade in Oaxaca is selling parchment to local intermediates at a market-set price.
Secondly, price increases for higher-quality cherries by up to 7-10 times provide a rapid and consistent return on investment from producers and can improve household income up to 10 timesthe average price gained from the market-set price.
This coffee caught our attention for its clean cup and rich, bourbon sweetness. Raw Material’s work, as well as their other regional offerings, is second to none and offers producers an extremelyviable means of living, which is something we as members of the coffee industry, must sup
