In the high valleys of northwest Guatemala, alongside the border of Mexico, is Hoja Blanca: a community surrounded by coffee farms in every direction. The climate is cooler throughout the year than many surrounding coffee growing regions, allowing for slow cherry maturation and very sweet coffees year to year. When the community was more isolated in the 1950s and 1960s, first generation smallholder producers invested decades of work, passing along their wisdom of coffee growing to their children and grandchildren. Now, third and fourth generation smallholder coffee producers in this community have a commitment to quality in their coffee production.
Onyx Green Coffee Importers has been working with farmers in this community for over a decade, purchasing single lots directly from producers each year. Their QC team in Guatemala works closely to analyze and bring in coffees of higher quality, cupping countless lots over the course of harvest to build this community coffee lot. This coffee comes from 12 farmers in Hoja Blanca, and each year they consistently bring clean, bright coffees. We love this coffee for it’s sweet and creamy qualities. It reminds us of apple chips, caramel, and hazelnut!
