For years famed Guatemalan producer and exporter Luis Pedro Zelaya has collected from small producers on the slopes of both volcanoes near Antigua to blend into specialty coffees marketed as the indigenous term “Hunapu”. These lots are typically day lot collections from numerous producers that roasters select from to build larger lots – a collection of numbers and flavors.
In 2013 Bonaventure founder, Kevin Bohlin, asked Luis Pedro to select the first Hunapu producer to be separated and celebrated individually. Luis Pedro knew without question the most consistent individual in both production and quality, Eduardo “Guayo” Gomez, better known by his neighbors and friends as Don Guayo. Eddie Gomez has added up a patchwork of small lots while also supporting his family and neighbors’ farms surrounding his own. Guayo receives premium pricing for his quality and consistency which he is able to extend to his neighbors as well. We are thrilled to see the same opportunities open for new Hunapu producers as each season unfolds!
