Costa Rica El Mango

We say: quite underrated! Diego Abarca is an emerging coffee producer from the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica. He has taken over part of the family business and now runs the Finca San Cayetano independently. He mainly produces washed coffees, but lets his signature flow more and more into honey and natural coffees. This coffee belongs to the Arabica family and corresponds to the Catuaí variety. The bushes grow at an altitude of 1,600 meters. After harvesting, the beans are processed using the Red Honey method. This means that a high proportion of pulp remains on the bean during drying. This process gives a high level of sweetness and pronounced fruit notes. Coffee producers from Costa Rica are considered pioneers in honey processing, which originated in Costa Rica. The Microlot coffee is characterized by its complex flavor profile. Tropical fruits are clearly recognizable, especially ripe honeydew melon. In the finish, the creamy, almost caramel-like sweetness becomes noticeable, which ensures a great balance.

From day one of our roastery, Azul has had a strong connection to Costa Rica and, last but not least, the name “Azul”, meaning blue in Spanish, refers to special Costa Rican green coffee qualities. Costa Rica, which means “rich coast”, not only reveals coffee treasures: a rich tropical flora and fauna, gigantic volcanoes, wonderful beaches and diving areas inspire locals and visitors alike. A third of the country is under nature protection.

Added to this is “pura vida”, the special attitude towards life of the locals. The Spanish expression for “pure life” is the saying for every occasion, whether to say hello, to say goodbye or to say thank you. At the same time, “pura vida” reflects the serenity of the Ticos, the inhabitants of Costa Rica, like a kind of mantra.
