Description
Swahili for “solidarity,” Umoja grows in South Kivu and is a product of the hard work of over 11,000 members. For many of the members, coffee is a key source of income and helps provide sustainable economic opportunities and stability. Women and minority-owned, Mighty Peace Coffee was created in the midst of the Congolese peace movement in 2018 by an international team that works to uphold both social and environmental justice. Its mission is to provide coffee connoisseurs and specialty enthusiasts quality coffee, while sharing the stories of Congolese friends and partners. To this end, their policies favor farmer and worker fairness that encompasses high labor standards and livable, transparent compensation. Centering on inclusivity and equality, they invest significantly in communities divided by violence – providing support, education, and opportunities to survivors. They are also committed to practices that support soil health, biodiversity, reforestation, and organic regenerative models that ensure the environment is protected. Ultimately the return of the Congolese coffee industry is directly contributing to peace in the region. Grown in the African Great Lakes region of South Kivu between 1500 – 2000 MASL, this fully washed coffee is comprised entirely of SL-34, a popular and highly regarded varietal in Africa. The coffee is fermented for 36 hours and then dried on raised beds. It has a light body coffee with complex, sweet, and ripe fruity flavors of plum, apricot, and golden raisin.
