Kenya

Kenya’s coffee industry is famous for its cooperative system of production, processing, grinding, marketing, and bidding system. About 70% of Kenyan coffee is produced by smallholders. It was estimated in 2012 that there are about 150,000 coffee farmers in Kenya and other estimates show that six million Kenyans were directly or indirectly employed in the coffee industry. The main coffee regions in Kenya are the high plateaus around Mount Kenya, the Aberdare chain, Kisii, Nyanza, Bungoma, Nakuru, Kericho, and to a lesser extent the Machakos and Taita hills in the eastern and coastal provinces, respectively.
