In 1993, Karen Wyland had her home kitchen inspected to sell frozen hand rolled pie dough and cookies to local markets. Two years later sales continued to increase and Karen expanded ‘Homemade Memories…Bakery’ to a commercial kitchen in the basement of The Clubhouse Bed and Breakfast located two blocks from her home kitchen. In addition to running The Clubhouse Bed and Breakfast, Karen would set up tables every Thursday and Friday on The Clubhouse front porch and have a “bake sale.” Soon customers started coming from a tri-county area to purchase some of the best homemade breads, pies, apple dumplings, sticky buns on the porch.
In 2005, a satellite location was opened to sell baked goods at 112 Allegheny Street in Hollidaysburg. Karen’s husband Bryan would deliver the baked goods to the shop in Hollidaysburg on his way to work. But eleven years of baked good porch sales and a satellite store would not provide enough income after the death of her husband and son, both lives ending from cancer. Knowing that she needed to provide for her and her daughter, Karen started looking for funding to open Mamie’s Cafe and Bakery. The funding proved to be a daunting task for a widow with little financial support, but in 2006 Karen came across ‘The Progress Fund’ who helped her start what is now known as one of Blair county’s best local eateries.
Karen knew that she had a talent and needed to expand what she had started. Mamie’s Cafe and Bakery was established in February 2007 and named after Karen’s Great Grandmother, Mamie Teeter, who owned and operated Teeter’s Hotel and Restaurant in Martinsburg for decades until her passing. Seven years after the relocation, her daughter, Valerie, a graduate of Penn State Smeal College of Business, partnered with her mother to continue to make Mamie’s Cafe and Bakery a DESTINATION for food lovers all over the country.
