At J. Hornig, we only roast the highest quality beans from the best growing areas in the world - and have been doing so since 1912. There are five words, in particular, that drive us: We are the most modern coffee brand. Always keeping this motto in mind, we have reinvented ourselves and our favorite drink over and over again over the past hundred years. At J. Hornig, however, we have kept one thing up to now: the method of gentle long-term roasting. Each of our beans is given just as much time as it needs to develop the perfect taste.

Time to unfold is not only of great importance for coffee beans. In our opinion, it has never been more important than today to consciously take time again: for the people you love, for yourself, and for things that are fun. For this reason, we at J. Hornig have set ourselves an important mission: We want to support people to experience their time more consciously.

At J. Hornig, we believe that things get really good if you do them carefully and with great attention to detail. That's why we consciously take our time when roasting - and want to inspire you to do the same while enjoying every single cup. Be it with your morning coffee at home, with a cold brew on the way, or on a coffee date with friends: inside in our J. Hornig coffee bar in the seventh district in Vienna - we accompany you when it comes to making time for to take yourself or others.

    Our history

    1912

Richard Schnürch, owner of the colonial and specerei specialty store "Zur Handelsflagge" in Grazer Sporgasse, wants to retire. He decides to bequeath the business to his apprentice Johannes Hornig I. In the same year, he officially reopened the shop as "Hornig, formerly Schnürch".

    1913

Johannes Hornig I starts selling the product that will define the company: coffee. The beans are slowly roasted in the drum. We still roast in this gentle way today.

    1925

After the end of the war, Richard Schnürch wants to sell his house in Sporgasse and changes the Hornigs' lease into a purchase agreement with payment in installments. The house and business in Sporgasse were paid off in 1925 and officially become the property of the family.

    1961

In 1961 the Hornig's opened their first shop on Tummelplatz in Graz. In addition to wholesale, which now supplies many retailers and restaurants, a separate retail division will develop in the coming years.

    1976

A 600 m² shop is opened in Schönaugasse in Graz and the first electronic ordering system is introduced. At that time, J. Hornig was still primarily a grocery and delicatessen store. Coffee turns out to be a core competence, however. 80 tons of beans are roasted every month.

    1994jhorning coffee package

Hornig Kaffee is the first Austrian coffee company to start working with "TransFair", a trade organization that promotes fair trade coffee.

    2015

The new specialty line “JOHO's” is launched. The beans for the three coffees from Brazil, Ethiopia, and Guatemala come directly from the farmers in the countries of origin. Without detours.

    2016

Black as night, hot as love: this is how it has to be, the perfect cup of coffee. Although - not necessarily, because coffee can also taste really good cold. Cold-brew is proof of that! In June 2016, the new summer drink will be launched at a press conference in Vienna.

    2017

New Coffee on the Block: In 2017 we will open our first coffee bar on Siebensterngasse in Vienna's 7th district. Directly traded coffees, homemade pastries, and other products from the region are on offer - and all of this in a cozy, modern atmosphere.

    2018

This innovation shows that coffee has long been more than just a wake-up call in the morning: Nitro Cold Brew. The coffee does not come from a portafilter machine, but from the tap. The new trendy drink has been available in the J. Hornig coffee bar in Vienna since 2018.

Simultaneously with the introduction of the new Cold Brew bottle, we are getting a tingling addition with the Sparkling Orange. Its fruity sibling is not long in coming: our Cold Brew Sparkling Ginger Lemon will be brought to the curtain in mid-2020. With both types, we refine our cold brew with sparkling carbon dioxide and an exciting fruity taste.

Our new, compostable capsules will follow in autumn. They consist of bio-based materials and do not contain any aluminum or plastic.  In addition, they are biodegradable and thus offer an all-around sustainable solution for enjoying coffee from the capsule machine.

THE SPECIALTY COFFEE BY J. HORNIG

When it comes to coffee quality, we at J. Hornig like to take the direct route. That is exactly what we do with our specialty coffees from Brazil, Ethiopia, and Guatemala. The beans for these three extraordinary single-origin coffees come directly from the farmer. Without any detours. This form of coffee trade brings farmers and roasters to one table. Both benefit from this - and of course the customer too.

    SAFETY

The roaster knows the farmer personally and agrees to a fixed purchase price for his coffee with him. So both can plan for the long term.

    FEEDBACK

Farmer and roaster regularly exchange ideas and pursue a common goal: to get the best possible taste out of the beans.

    QUALITY

The customer receives the highest coffee quality. He can also trace the path taken by the beans. He knows where his coffee comes from and who grew it.
