The name Gichathaini comes from the wet mill where the coffee was processed. In Kenya a wet mill is often called a factory. Gichathaini is under the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative Society umbrella organization, which has a long history of high-quality coffees. The members of the cooperation get to vote on representation, contracts for their coffee and profit allocation.
Gichathaini has 897 members who all have small lots, often harvesting from only 200 coffee trees. Each batch of cherries that a member delivers to the factory get a specific lot code. This code follows the coffee through the washing process at the Gichathaini factory.
The water for processing comes from the nearby Ragati river. The Nyeri region has plenty of water supply, but with climate change it cannot be taken for granted. For that same reason the water from processing is re-circulated at Gichathaini for conservation purposes.
