What is the difference between coffee cherries, glassine coffee, and green coffee?

Coffee cherries are stone fruits including beans that resemble a cherry. The so-called de-pulping separates the coffee beans from the pulp, the pulp, and the peel of the cherry. One kilo of parchment coffee (coffee beans with parchment skins) can be obtained from five kilos of coffee cherries. One kilo of parchment coffee corresponds to approx. 680 grams of green coffee (coffee beans without parchment skins). From 7.35 kilos of coffee cherries, you get 1 kilo of green coffee.

The price of the coffee depends on the degree of processing, e.g. For example, whether the farmer sells coffee cherries to the cooperative or goods that have already been processed into glassine coffee.

What does "gentle long-term roasting process" mean?

With this traditional method, the beans are gently roasted for 10 to 16 minutes.Small amounts of green coffee are roasted in an externally heated drum with constant movement and gently cooled with air. This gives the green coffee enough time to slowly develop into a fully roasted and mild roasted coffee.

    Advantages:

The longer a coffee is roasted, the more bitter substances and chlorogenic acids are released, because this process is time-dependent.That is why the GEPA coffees are milder and more aromatic than the commercially available "turbo-roasted" coffees.

What is special about GEPA Mild Orgánico coffee?organico mild gepa

Our Mild Orgánico is pretreated with steam before roasting. In this refinement process, which works without chemical additives, the so-called roasting irritants are reduced.

How are GEPA's soluble fair trade coffees made?

As a quick alternative, GEPA offers soluble coffees, fair trade of course. But how are they made? First of all, soluble GEPA coffee is made exclusively from roasted coffee using water, so it does not contain any additives.

By the way, our “Bio Café Kagera” is produced almost entirely in the country of origin. In Europe, it is only bottled and packaged.

The article in our customer magazine GEPA AKTUELL, which you can download below, shows how the high-quality beans from our coffee partners can be turned into an aromatic, soluble instant alternative.

Why has GEPA expanded the Orgánico range at all?

We want to reach even more people and respond to changing needs and consumption habits. As before, there is Café Orgánico ground for the filter machine (as before); The range of beans for fully automatic machines and portafilter has been expanded. In addition to pads, we now also offer capsules.

Why is GEPA introducing coffee capsules at all?

According to statistics, around four million Germans over the age of 14 drink coffee from coffee capsules every day. We want to offer the better alternative here - with industrially compostable capsules filled with organic fair-trade coffee. Smallholders in Africa and Latin America have additional market opportunities and development prospects.

How does the GEPA capsule differ from conventional capsules?

Our capsules are aluminum and plastic-free - this does not apply to conventional capsules. These consist of aluminum or petroleum-based plastic. They cannot completely decompose.
