    Folgers History

The predecessor of the Folger Coffee Company was founded in San Francisco, California in 1850 as Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. Founder William H. Bovee saw an opportunity to produce both brewed and ground coffee. Before that, Californians had to buy green coffee beans and roast and grind them themselves. To help build his factory, Bovee hired James Atearn (J.A.) Folger as a carpenter. Folgore came here from Nantucket at age 15 with his two older brothers during the California Gold Rush. In the 1850s, kerosene began to provide a cheaper alternative to whale oil, the lifeblood of Nantucket, causing many of its ships to be diverted to transport coffee from South America to San Francisco. After working at Bovee's plant for nearly a year, Folger had amassed enough money to file a claim with the company and start mining gold. He agreed to take coffee and spice samples along the way and take grocery orders. Returning to San Francisco in 1865, Folger became a full partner of Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. In 1872, he acquired other partners and renamed the firm J.A. Folger & Company

James married Folgore in 1861. He and his wife have four children, two of whom work in the family business. When Folger died in 1889, his eldest son, James A. Folger II, became president of J.A. 26-year-old Folger & Company.

In the 1900s, the company took off, thanks in large part to a salesman named Frank P. Atha. Atha sold coffee in the California area, but suggested to James Folger II that he open and manage a Folgers Coffee factory in Texas. After Atha opened its Texas facility, the company grew exponentially.

Under Peter Folger's leadership in the mid-20th century, the brand became one of the most important coffee companies in North America and the largest coffee market in the world. Procter & Gamble acquired Folger's in 1963 and dropped the apostrophe from the name. During P&G's ownership, Folgers became the No. 1 coffee brand in the United States.

Procter & Gamble announced in January 2008 that Folgers would be spun off into a separate company based in Cincinnati, but reversed course in June and announced that by the end of 2008, Folgers would be taken over by J.M. Smucker & Company. In November 2008, Smucker bought Folgers as a subsidiary using a rare financial technology called Reverse Morris Trust.

    Folgers Coffee

    A PIONEER OF COFFEE

Our story starts with James Folger who, at the age of 14, traveled to San Francisco. He and his two brothers came from Nantucket in search of gold after a major fire destroyed their family's livelihood. While his brothers left for the mines, James stayed behind and got a job with The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills.

James became a full partner of The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. But, following the Civil War, the economy collapsed - resulting in the business going bankrupt. He convinced his creditors to pay off the company's debts and then bought out all the other partners, renaming the company J.A. Folger & Co.
