What is an Aeropress?
The Aeropress is a handy little device that consists of several parts: a top, bottom, filter and some handy tools. The plastic device looks simple and it is. The technology of the Aeropress is not only simple, but also quite ingenious. The device consists of two cylinders that fit together. Making coffee with an Aeropress
With an Aeropress you can make coffee in no time. There are two methods of brewing coffee with an Aeropress: the traditional method and the inverted method. Read below how to brew coffee with an Aeropress using both methods.
WHAT YOU NEED.
– An Aeropress
– Aeropress filters (metal or paper)
– fresh ground coffee
– hot water (92 to 96 degrees Celsius)
– stopwatch or timer – this is usually on your smartphone
– a mug
THE TRADITIONAL METHOD
We’ll start with the most logical and simple method of brewing coffee with an Aeropress: the traditional method. This is the method that is basically the basics:
Step 1. Place the Aeropress filter in the holder and wet it a little. Then screw the holder with a filter onto the Aeropress.
Step 2. With the filter facing down, place the bottom of the Aeropress on a mug. Make sure this stands firmly.
Step 3. Now fill the Aeropress with ground coffee.
Step 4. Pour a little hot water on top of the coffee to let it brew up. Will some drops of water come through the filter? That’s perfectly normal; there’s nothing wrong.
Step 5. Wait about 30 seconds and then pour in more water until there are 250 ml.
Step 6. Put the top of the Aeropress on top. A vacuum will now form.
Step 7. Wait about 30 to 60 seconds. Note! No longer than that!
Step 8. Push the top down so that it slides into the bottom and pushes the water down through the coffee and filter, into the mug. Try to perform this within 30 to 45 seconds.
Note! You have to use quite a bit of force to push the Aeropress down. Therefore, do this carefully and in a controlled manner.
THE INVERTED METHOD
Another method of brewing coffee with an Aeropress is the inverted method. This is quite similar to the traditional method, but as the name suggests, you turn the device upside down. Want to brew coffee with an Aeropress using the inverted method? Then follow this step-by-step plan:
Step 1. Place the top of the Aeropress on the bottom; push them together about an inch. Then turn the Aeropress over so that the part where the filter should be on top is on top.
Step 2. Is the Aeropress standing firmly? Then fill the top with coffee.
Step 3. Pour a small amount of hot water on top and let it brew.
Step 4. Wait about 30 seconds and then pour in more water until there is 250 ml.
Step 5. Stir the brew vigorously.
Step 6. Screw on the filter and wait 30 to 60 seconds. Caution! No longer than 1 minute!
Step 7. Turn the Aeropress over and place it on a mug.
Step 8. Push on the top so that the water ends up in the mug through the coffee and filter. Try to perform this in about 30 to 45 seconds; not too slow and not too fast.

Aeropress metal filters vs. paper filters
If you are going to brew coffee with an Aeropress then you will need special Aeropress filters. Usually you use simple and cheap paper Aeropress filters. You often buy these with several at a time. There are also metal Aeropress filters for sale. Because of the material, the metal filters are of course a little more expensive, but they are reusable. The Aeropress metal filters are strong and smooth, making them easy to clean. Since you don’t have to throw them away after every cup of coffee, they are also a lot better for the environment.
